What type of geese are the famous Geese of March?
Our much loved local geese are believed to be Embden geese which are a German breed of domestic goose. This domestic breed can live up to 20 years. A hardy breed that can have a docile temperament and can easily become tame. They make good guards as are known to make lots of noise if any unwanted visitors approach. The true Embden has a proud stature and reaches a metre in height and can weigh up to 15 kg. The breed is considered one of the oldest domestic goose breeds, with a documented history dating back approximately 200 years.

Legend has it…
Our town geese were abandoned by the river on Christmas Day due to someone having a change of heart about their Christmas dinner choices… Local resident Nikki Grundy saw the original 7 geese in 2012. Nikki has been a key figure in looking after the geese, without her support they may not have survived, let alone thrived.

The geese have always divided local opinion. Some locals dislike them and complain about goose poop. Some locals fear walking past them because of their assertive stares and occasional hiss.
